What is Danshen Extract/Powder  ?

Danshen (Salvia bowleyana) is a root commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is often combined with other herbs, such as Panax notoginseng.
Over 35 formulations used in TCM contain danshen. Chemicals in danshen might help with blood thinning. They might also help widen blood vessels, which can improve circulation.
People use danshen for heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, wound healing, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
Danshen is sometimes called Chinese red sage, Chinese sage, red root safe, and red Sage. Don't confuse this with sage. These are not the same.

The application of Danshen Extract/Powder

Danshen Extract Has Antioxidant, Antimigratory and Antiproliferative Effects on  Stimulated VSMCs:The effects of DE on ROS generation, migration, and proliferation of VSMCs were evaluated by induction. According to the CM-H2DCF-DA emission results from FACS, DE most significantly decreased the amount of ROS at a concentration of 100μg/mL. Further in vitro studies were conducted with a 100μg/mL concentration of DE, the levels of which increased MnSOD and HO-1 expression. Both are important molecules for the inhibition of VSMC proliferation and ROS production. The expression of HO-1 was increased by DE even after  treatment. On MnSOD, DE treatment prevented the decreased expression induced . To evaluate changes in signaling after DE treatment, the expression of PI3K/Akt was analyzed. Although (20ng/mL, 24h) stimulated the phosphorylation of Akt, this effect was blocked by DE treatment with a dose of 100μg/mL.

Danshen Extract Exerts Anti-Inflammatory and Antiapoptotic Effects on HUVECs:To determine the effects of DE on endothelial cells, HUVECs with or without DE pretreatment for 24h were incubated with TNF-α (10ng/mL) for 24 hours. TNF-α alone increased the expression of VCAM-1 in HUVECs, whereas DE pretreatment significantly inhibited TNF-α induced VCAM-1 expression. The effect of DE on VCAM-1 expression in the HUVECs correlated with that of balloon injured rat arteries. Although endothelium exhibited a significant increase in VCAM-1 expression after balloon injury, the expression of VCAM-1 in those of rats who had been given DE was significantly decreased.
