What is Gamma Oryzanol ?

Gamma-oryzanol is group of chemicals found in rice bran oil. It is also found in wheat bran and some fruits and vegetables.
Gamma-oryzanol isn't absorbed well in the gut. Because of this, it might reduce cholesterol levels by reducing how much cholesterol is absorbed from foods.
People use gamma-oryzanol for high cholesterol, symptoms of menopause, athletic performance, eczema, high blood pressure, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses.
Due to its UVA and UVB absorption capacity, gamma oryzanol is preferably used in sun protection products. As it also has a stimulating effect on the sebaceous glands, it is particularly suitable for dry and mature skin. Gamma oryzanol stimulates blood circulation and fat metabolism. It is excellent as an antioxidant and also as an antistatic additive in hair care products.

High cholesterol levels. Most research shows that taking gamma oryzanol by mouth decreases total cholesterol, "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and blood fats called triglycerides in people with high cholesterol. However, the effects of gamma oryzanol on "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol are mixed. Taking gamma oryzanol along with vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, and niacin by mouth for 4 months also seems to reduce LDL cholesterol in people with high cholesterol. However, one study suggests that consuming rice bran oil containing a high amount of gamma oryzanol for 4 weeks does not reduce LDL cholesterol better than rice bran oil containing a low amount of gamma oryzanol in men with high cholesterol.

Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses:Rice bran oil is used extensively, especially in Asia, for cooking. It has a nut-like flavor and a high smoke point, making it suitable for deep frying and cooking at high temperatures. Rice bran extracts are used in the cosmetic industry.Isolation, extraction, and purification of gamma oryzanol were first reported in the mid-1950s. It has been sold in Japan as a medicine since 1962, first to treat anxiety and later in menopause. Gamma oryzanol and rice bran oil therapy have been used to manage elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels since the late 1980s.

General uses:Clinical trial data are often of poor methodology, making it difficult to support suggested clinical applications; however, rice bran oil and its components may have applications in high cholesterol, cancer, and dermatology.

What is the recommended dosage:Rice bran oil has been used in doses of up to 800 mg daily in clinical studies in high cholesterol. Purified gamma oryzanol has been used at a daily dose of 500 mg/day.
